What is Geofencing?
Geofencing is drawing a virtual boundary around a physical location so software can tell whether a device is inside or outside it. In contract security it is most often used to let a guard clock in only while actually at the assigned site.

How does geofencing work for guard clock-in?
Each site is stored with coordinates and a radius. When a guard attempts to clock in, their device reports its position and the system compares it against the boundary. Inside, the clock-in is accepted and the coordinates are recorded with it. Outside, it is refused.
Radius choice is the whole game. Too tight and honest guards get locked out by ordinary GPS drift near tall buildings; too loose and a guard can clock in from the parking lot across the street. Most operators tune it per site rather than using one global value.
What geofencing cannot do
- It proves a device was at a location, not that a specific person was, which is why selfie or photo verification is usually paired with it.
- Consumer GPS accuracy is typically tens of metres and degrades badly indoors, underground, and between high-rises.
- A boundary check at clock-in says nothing about whether the guard stayed. Patrol checkpoints cover that gap.
Is geofencing employee tracking?
Location collection tied to employment is regulated, and the rules vary by jurisdiction. Employers are generally expected to give notice about what is collected and when, and several states impose stricter requirements. Limiting collection to active, scheduled shifts is both the common practice and the narrowest defensible position.
