What is Fire watch?
A fire watch is a dedicated patrol assigned to detect fires in a building whose fire protection system is impaired or offline, walking the affected areas at a required interval and logging each round.
Also called: fire watch patrol, fire guard.
When is a fire watch required?
A fire watch is typically ordered when a building's fire alarm or sprinkler system is out of service, during hot work such as welding or cutting, or after a fire code violation. The requirement, the patrol interval, and the record-keeping obligations come from the authority having jurisdiction, usually the local fire marshal, and are not set by the security company.
What does a fire watch log need to show?
Fire watch records are usually inspected, so they are held to a stricter standard than an ordinary patrol log. Expect to show the time of each round, the areas covered, the identity of the person on watch, and any condition observed, with the intervals actually matching what the order required.
